Light signals

Divers avoid shining their lights into other diver's eyes. For this same reason it is not a good idea to have a mask-mounted light, apart from possibly a last reserve backup.

OK = Shine the light in a slow circle on the bottom or into the water ahead towards the other diver if he is swimming ahead of you.

Emergency = Anything wild and fast is interpreted as an emergency. So keep your light moving slowly if there is no emergency.

Attention = a horizontal (usually) or vertical (depending on orientation) swish from left to right and back several times. Don't do this too fast unless there is an emergency. This sign is to get the other diver's attention and does not indicate an emergency.

Other signs are usually too complex to signal with light signals and are therefore communicated by getting the dive buddy's attention (see above), followed by shining your torch at your own hand signals.
