Force Fin SD1 Military
Guys, this is one to look forward to!
Next weekend we're putting the SD-1 through what might be one of its coldest environment yet. Stay tuned...
Update: Unfortunately the visibility was about three feet on average, dark, murky, sediments from a gravel pit... as you can see in the Dive Trips article - useless underwater action shots :-(
Bob Evans of Force Fin was kind enough to send me a pair of SD-1's in time for the ice diving course. Unfortunately I did not get any video clips of the fins in action or anything decent photographed underwater due to the truly bad visibility (see gallery). We do look forward to testing them in our next dive adventures in more detail, but are already convinced we'd like to keep a pair permanently. Just got to work out a price with Bob, and then we'll hopefully be diving a lot with these this year! See our gallery below for some more shots of the Force Fin SD-1's! More in the dive trip - ice diving gallery!
So far, we can attest to the Force Fin SD-1's being top quality gear though, as I know the Tan Delta material from my earlier fins, and they're pretty much the gold standard for fin material. Lightweight, lots of flex, strong. The cold (minus 10 on the first day) didn't affect the plastic quick release buckles at all, the flexibility of the Tan Delta material is top notch and the looks head-turning! Oh, yes, the underwater performance - nothing to fault. I compared them to my Jetfins and found them to be quite similar to them when moving around, and very different to regular Force Fins. You certainly "feel" them more, but I think in a good way. The light weight and compact size make these the ideal Globetrotting-Fin to carry.
The small felt pad on the underside effectively prevents slipping on wet rocks, and is replaceable when it eventually wears down/off.
UPDATE: For some really stunning (if I may say so myself) underwater shots of these fins in action, check out our dive trip to the temporary lake "Grüner See" in Austria - cruising water at 6 degree Celsius.
