Technical Diving from the Bottom Up by Kevin Gurr
Kevin Gurr is one of the best known technical divers, highly experienced and respected in his field. With this book he is offering a substantial collection of interesting information about technical diving, but also a well-written wrap-up of aspects to make recreational diving safer. I would argue it is not just for the technical diver, but for anyone who has started diving and wants to learn why the more experienced divers chose different setups, how they select and arrange their kit. Even though most dive students learn to use an SMB once in a regular PADI class, it is not without proper training and practice that these basic tasks become automatic and safe. Personally I found this book as well as the (GUE) book "Fundamentals of Better Diving" by Jarrod Jablonski the two best books so far. Arguments for or against various organizations aside, I believe most divers would benefit from reading up on different skills and practises recommended by other agencies and instructors. Kevin Gurr's book can very well be one of the first ones you get, the sheer amounts of topics covered is astounding.
